The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is one of the most fascinating state parks that we have been to. Enchanted Rock is a granite batholith that has been exposed over millions of years.
With some 11 miles of trails it is a camping and hiking heaven. The park is 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965, or from Llano, take State Highway 16 for 14 miles south and then go west on Ranch Road 965.

A view from Little Rock
Enchanted Rock is an exfoliation dome. After the rock and soil on top of the rock weathered away, the granite expanded slightly because of the reduced weight on it. That expansion caused the dome to peel open into slices as seen here.
As the outer layer of the rock cracks into smaller pieces and slides off, the next layer begins to peel away from the dome.

The Loop Trail is not as interesting as the other trails but offers some great views

It is so tranquil here
